UCI's English Ph.D. program ranks as the nation's top department for literary and critical theory (US News and World Report). Faculty research and teaching spans diverse fields, historical eras, and methodological perspectives. Our alumni have secured faculty positions at prestigious institutions nationwide, such as the University of Michigan, Tulane, Rice, Clemson, BYU, and Connecticut College in recent years.

Numerous PhD faculty and students engage in collaborative, interdisciplinary research clusters and reading groups. Currently active groups feature The Center for Early Cultures, the Culture and Capital Center, Medieval Devysings, Poetics History Theory, the Queer Theory Reading Group, and the Rhetoric Reading Group. The Ph.D. program offers flexibility for students to tailor their studies around personal intellectual pursuits. Qualification Requirements

All applicants must meet the following minimum academic requirements:

  • Hold a bachelor‚Äôs degree (or equivalent) from a recognized academic institution with degree standards equivalent to those of the University of California
  • Have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0

TOEFL Score Requirements for Admission Consideration:

  • On the TOEFL iBT minimum score of 80
  • For the paper-based test, a minimum score of 550

IELTS Score Requirements for Admission Consideration:

  • An overall minimum score of 7 for admission, with a score of no less than 6 on any individual module.
  • Applicants who qualify for admission by the above criteria, and also achieve a score of 8 or higher on the Speaking module may be eligible to serve as a Teaching Assistant.
