The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's East Asian Languages and Cultures graduate program stems from the Department's belief that truly comprehending East Asia requires both extensive language skills and mastery of theoretical approaches that shape advanced cultural studies. Our Master's and Doctoral programs are built upon this foundational principle. We urge our graduate students to cultivate a wide-ranging perspective when examining East Asia - crossing historical eras, academic fields, and regional borders while evaluating how different theories and methods can illuminate East Asian cultures. The Ph.D. represents an elite research qualification that opens doors to diverse professional opportunities. While many graduates enter academia as professors or researchers, others apply their specialized East Asian expertise in government or corporate roles. The degree can also complement interdisciplinary graduate work, such as combined with an M.B.A. As the University's most advanced degree, Ph.D. applicants must already hold an M.A., whether from our Department or another institution.
