The doctoral program in Japanese studies enables students to focus on Japanese linguistics and cultural studies while equipping them for university-level teaching positions. Students will work with distinguished faculty conducting research in this field and develop mastery in Japanese language, academic research methodologies, and teaching practices. The doctoral curriculum requires a minimum of 30 credit hours in East Asian Studies coursework, plus 12-15 credit hours in an elective discipline like visual arts, historical studies, government, folk traditions, or literary comparisons. Japanese language acquisition forms a core component of the doctoral program. Depending on research specialization, competence in another contemporary East Asian language or classical East Asian language might be required. Furthermore, students must demonstrate reading ability in French, German, or another European language relevant to their research focus.
