The Department of Spanish and Portuguese proudly offers M.A. and Ph.D. programs focused on the interdisciplinary exploration of Portuguese-speaking regions (Brazil, Portugal, Lusophone Africa, and Lusophone Asia), with special attention to their literary and cultural traditions. Our curriculum highlights comparative perspectives, examining relationships both within Portuguese-speaking areas and between these regions and other parts of the globe, particularly Spanish America and Spain. Combining required foundational courses with opportunities to take relevant classes across disciplines, we provide comprehensive training for students holding a B.A. or M.A. in Portuguese or related fields like Latin American Studies, Spanish, Comparative Literature, or Romance Languages and Literatures.
