Annually, the department selects a limited cohort of dedicated candidates for its Ph.D. track, typically spanning five years. While no terminal M.A. program exists, students may request an M.A. upon passing the general examination. Participants must reside in Princeton for at least one year of coursework to meet university requirements. The Ph.D. curriculum includes coursework completion, general examinations, a dissertation prospectus colloquium, and final dissertation work. Most students take the initial "erudition exam" portion of their general exams during their third fall semester after finishing twelve courses across four terms, both in German and other departments. The specialized exam and prospectus colloquium usually occur in the third spring semester. Those entering with prior graduate credentials (such as an M.A.) may qualify for accelerated coursework (three semesters) and earlier general exams (second spring semester). After completing these milestones, students often spend their fourth year conducting overseas dissertation research before returning to write during their fifth year—or sixth year if supported by external research fellowships.
