The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics provides graduate programs culminating in Master of Arts degrees for French, German, and Spanish studies, along with Doctor of Philosophy options in French or Spanish. Students can explore comprehensive courses and seminars covering all principal areas and historical periods of French, German, Spanish, and Spanish-American literature. To earn a Ph.D., candidates must complete 90 graduate-level credit hours post-bachelor's degree (incorporating any relevant M.A. credits), with 61 hours dedicated to their primary field and nine hours to a secondary concentration, in addition to passing a comprehensive examination.

Qualification Requirements

To be considered for admission to the Ph.D. program in French a student must:
Hold a Master's degree (or equivalent) in French.
Have a 3.50 (on the 4.00 scale) on all graduate course work.
Students entering the program are encouraged to show evidence of residence in a French-speaking country.
Scoring 6.5 or higher on the IELTS, Scoring 79 or higher on the Internet-based TOEFL (iBT)
