Florida State's Foreign and Second Language Education (FSLE) program equips you for a fulfilling career teaching English as a second language (ESL) or foreign languages like Spanish, Italian, German, and more. Our program provides both research-focused and practical degree options at the master's, specialist, and doctoral levels. In today's globalized society, the need for ESL instructors and foreign language educators keeps growing across the U.S. and internationally. English proficiency remains a highly sought-after skill worldwide, while English speakers themselves frequently seek to acquire additional languages. Those who pursue teaching English to non-native speakers will encounter distinctive professional opportunities unavailable in other fields. Doctoral students explore subjects including foreign/second language teaching methods, second language acquisition, research techniques, language evaluation, the psychology of language learning, along with educational psychology and policy. The program enables students to engage in independent and collaborative research on contemporary second language education topics, with opportunities to share findings at prominent academic conferences.
