The University of Hawaii launched its PhD program in Second Language Studies in 1989. This program's graduate faculty includes all SLS department members, select professors from East Asian Languages and Literatures and Linguistics departments, along with affiliated faculty from related disciplines.
This doctoral program aims to advance high-level research across key SLS domains including analysis, acquisition, application, and instruction. Critical questions remain about second language acquisition processes, optimal teaching approaches, and the psychosocial influences on learning. Enhanced comprehension is needed regarding linguistic styles, dialect diversity, and numerous related aspects. Such knowledge profoundly affects language proficiency evaluation, curriculum design, pedagogical approaches, language-related legal/social policies, and our fundamental grasp of language itself.
