The Department of Art Education equips future arts education leaders with innovative approaches for evolving educational environments, combining critical analysis, creative exploration, transformative practices, and inclusive viewpoints to shape equitable and sustainable outcomes. Our M.A. in Art Education provides three distinct pathways—Advanced Studies, Museum Education, and Teaching Certification—designed to help you: Strengthen your advocacy for arts education, Rediscover your teaching inspiration, Emerge as an institutional leader, Develop expertise to impact administrative decisions, and Join a vibrant professional network.
This program is ideal for certified art teachers seeking graduate-level coursework, museum education careers, or Texas K-12 art certification. The master's degree enhances understanding of art education theory, practice, and research while allowing specialization in specific educational approaches. Our curriculum blends analytical thinking, creative investigation, transformative practices, and inclusive methodologies for sustainable impact. Students can choose between advanced coursework for professional growth or specialized certifications across our three tracks, with optional thesis/project alternatives to practicum requirements. The 36-credit program leads to an M.A. in Art Education.
Option 3 focuses on preparing educators for EC-12 teaching positions, combining all-level art certification with graduate-level study. Applicants must complete 24 studio art credits and 12 art history credits (including 6 advanced-level) prior to enrollment.
