The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Music program caters to graduate students seeking specialized academic training in ethnomusicology, music education, music history, or music theory at a leading research institution. The School of Music provides degree tracks for the Master of Arts with concentrations in ethnomusicology, musicology (music history and literature), music education, and music theory. Additionally, it offers Master of Music degrees in performance, composition, conducting, and music education, along with doctoral programs including the Ph.D. in ethnomusicology, musicology, music education, and music theory, and the Doctor of Musical Arts in composition, performance, and conducting. Our M.A. programs typically span two years, requiring thirty graduate credit hours. While most culminate in a thesis, several programs offer a non-thesis alternative featuring extra coursework and a reduced-scale project.
Those applicants who have earned or will earn a bachelor's degree at a regionally accredited college or university in the United States (or the equivalent of a baccalaureate degree from a nationally recognized institution in another country) are eligible to be considered for admission to the Graduate School at the University of Maryland
