The Doctor of Musical Arts program provides specialization in performance (encompassing conducting and jazz studies) with optional focus areas such as collaborative piano, composition, conducting, contemporary music, early music, jazz studies, music education, music and medicine, musicology, music theory, opera, performance, sacred music, or vocal pedagogy. This advanced degree mandates completion of at least 84 credit hours beyond the bachelor's level, typically spanning three years. Following the initial 30 credits (equivalent to a master's degree in the primary field), students must complete an additional 54 credit hours.
Performance majors must fulfill residency requirements through two consecutive full semesters (either fall-spring or spring-fall) while maintaining a minimum course load of 9 credits per term. Conducting students have a more extensive residency obligation of four consecutive full semesters with the same 9-credit minimum per term. Wind conducting students may alternatively meet residency through a sequence of two summer sessions, two regular semesters, and two additional summer sessions. Jazz studies candidates follow the same residency pattern as performance majors, completing two consecutive full semesters with 9 credits each term.
