Students can complete both the J.D. and Master of Regional Planning degrees in four years, which includes one summer term, through the collaborative program between UNC School of Law and the Department of City and Regional Planning. Separate applications to each institution are required. The entire first-year law curriculum must be completed consecutively, along with specific mandatory planning courses. Beyond these requirements, students have flexible course options, pending approval from a joint faculty committee representing both departments. To graduate, participants must fulfill 74 law school credit hours and 36 planning department credit hours. Both degrees are conferred only after meeting all academic requirements from both schools.

The minimum requirements are a bachelor's degree (based on a four-year curriculum) completed before graduate study begins or its international equivalent with an accredited institution; an average grade of B (cumulative GPA 3.0) or better.
