The U.S. History program at UNC Chapel Hill stands as one of the institution's most prestigious academic offerings. Renowned for its sustained excellence, the program boasts exceptional library collections and robust institutional backing. With over twenty faculty experts, the American History curriculum maintains comprehensive coverage across all historical eras. While particularly strong in social and cultural history, the program also features specialized tracks in African American studies, Native American history, military and international affairs, constitutional law, economic and business development, as well as gender and women's studies. Graduate candidates in American History must develop proficiency in three chronological divisions (colonial era, 19th century, and modern America) plus one specialized thematic concentration, such as African-American studies, Native American heritage, women's historical experiences, or American cultural evolution. In addition to mandatory research seminars for all doctoral candidates, U.S. History specialists complete a year-long seminar series on American historical scholarship. The program actively promotes interdisciplinary methods, leading many graduate students to incorporate relevant coursework from literature, visual arts, anthropology, and other academic disciplines into their studies.
