The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences' Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures provides two cross-disciplinary graduate programs focusing on East Asian literature, culture, visual arts, history, and languages, with special attention to comparative approaches and critical methods. Students can pursue either a terminal Master's degree or a PhD track. The PhD program, requiring at least three years of East Asian language study for admission, prepares dedicated full-time candidates for doctoral research. Through diverse coursework, seminars, and colloquia, participants develop historical perspective, analytical skills, proficiency in East Asian language texts, and the research capabilities needed for original scholarly work.

Writing samples should be approximately 15 pages in length and composed in English.
