Global history focuses on examining phenomena that extend beyond geographical boundaries, encompassing multiple regions, countries, and civilizations. Key areas of study include colonialism, imperialism, nationalism, international affairs, environmental changes, religious movements, ideological shifts, labor dynamics, migration patterns, industrial growth, conflicts and peacebuilding, scientific advancements, slavery, gender studies, trade networks, cultural trends, and population changes. Scholars in this field adopt a worldwide, cross-border viewpoint to analyze these developments, offering historical perspectives that connect diverse societies in ways traditional regional or national histories cannot. Those pursuing this discipline begin with two core seminars that survey influential literature while helping them identify their specialized research focus. Their selection of a faculty advisor and their MA/PhD projects will align with this chosen theme. Given global history's emphasis on transnational influences, students often collaborate with experts across various fields. Beyond the History Department's curriculum, relevant courses may be found in other departments within this institution as well as at Duke University and North Carolina State University.
