A PhD is an advanced research qualification. The core focus of graduate education involves cultivating professional expertise in historical investigation, with most history PhD holders pursuing academic teaching positions. Our department aims to equip doctoral candidates with research and teaching capabilities while also preparing them for diverse career paths such as public history and archival work.
The PhD curriculum offers a structured approach for students to gain: (1) comprehensive knowledge of their chosen field along with current debates and scholarship, (2) specialized training in their primary research and teaching area, (3) foundational understanding of a secondary field, (4) methodological research skills, (5) necessary language proficiency, and (6) completion of an original dissertation that makes a meaningful contribution to historical scholarship.
