The faculty (Professors Goldman, von Glahn, and Wong) collectively address Chinese history spanning from the Song dynasty (10th-13th centuries) through the modern era. Students can focus on specialized themes including socio-economic history (von Glahn and Wong), urban and socio-cultural studies (Goldman), religious traditions and society (von Glahn), political economy (Wong), and gender studies (Goldman). The faculty employs interdisciplinary methods in their examination of Chinese history, with all members transcending traditional dynastic and disciplinary lines in both research and instruction. Professors Wong and von Glahn additionally participate in the History Department's World History program, highlighting China's role within global and comparative historical contexts.
UCLA's Chinese history program benefits from robust complementary departments including Japanese History, European History, Gender Studies, Economic History, and World History within the History Department, along with outstanding programs in classical/modern Chinese literature, East Asian Buddhism, and Korean studies in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures.
