History graduate students at the University of Colorado Boulder receive comprehensive training in core historical principles and research methodologies through coursework and professional seminars. They develop deep expertise in their specialized field while learning to place their research within broader transnational and global frameworks. The Ph.D. program accepts qualified candidates with undergraduate history degrees or equivalent preparation directly, without requiring a Master's degree first. This means many students complete both their Master's and Ph.D. degrees during their time at CU Boulder.
Students who wish to work toward the PhD degree in history must indicate knowledge of certain fields of history, acquaintance with the fundamental tools of historical scholarship and the ability to do original work. The PhD program does not require the completion of a master's degree, but directly admits those qualified applicants who hold an undergraduate history degree or who have completed appropriate undergraduate history preparation and who have been recommended by the graduate admissions committee.
All international applicants are required to meet a minimum standard of English proficiency.
