The UC Berkeley Medieval Studies Program is an interdisciplinary initiative that organizes and funds lectures, special events, and visiting faculty positions. It fosters collaborative academic pursuits among medieval scholars across various departments and facilitates information sharing. The Medieval Studies Committee provides a concurrent PhD program where students maintain a primary departmental focus while receiving foundational training in medieval studies disciplines. Graduates earn a dual-title PhD in both their home discipline and medieval studies (such as English with medieval studies or history with medieval studies). This concurrent degree maintains rigorous training in a primary discipline while expanding the student's expertise across medieval studies. Students pursuing this dual degree must complete all doctoral requirements for their main field of study.
Applicants admitted to a doctoral program that requires a master’s degree to be earned at Berkeley as a prerequisite (even though the applicant already has a master’s degree from another institution in the same or a closely allied field of study) will be permitted to undertake the second master’s degree, despite the overlap in field.
The following minimum requirements apply to all graduate programs and will be verified by the Graduate Division:
