The department boasts a vibrant, multifaceted research team investigating plant-specific characteristics and utilizing plant models to explore widely relevant scientific questions. Key research focuses encompass plant-pathogen relationships, cellular signaling mechanisms, growth processes, genomic studies, and chromosome research. Following core departmental coursework, marine biology students gain access to the Institute of Marine Sciences' facilities in Morehead City, NC. Collaborative agreements enable deep-sea investigations using Duke University Marine Laboratory's research vessel. Unique interdisciplinary programs in genetics, ecology, neurobiology, and marine sciences provide exceptional training opportunities through collaborations between Biology Department faculty and experts from Arts & Sciences and Health Affairs divisions.
