The Globalization and International Development research cluster examines various aspects of globalization, analyzing the complex interactions and connections within development frameworks worldwide. These globalizing forces (along with the counter-globalization and social justice movements they've sparked) are transforming how capital, labor, technology, information, and commodities circulate across international and local contexts. Scholars in this field explore topics including material culture and post-Soviet economies, geopolitical relations, religious studies, gender identity, food systems, natural resource governance, mining sectors, human migration, racial dynamics, postcolonial theory, and ecological governance with a justice lens. Our faculty and students actively participate in UNC's interdisciplinary research hubs focusing on American, International, and Area Studies. Additionally, UNC geographers collaborate with numerous initiatives, discussion forums, and research collectives both within the university and at Duke, with cross-registration opportunities available for students.
