The program equips students for professional paths in academia, mainly within psychology, sociology, or human development, as well as for research roles in government agencies and diverse community programs or private sector initiatives. It does not train students to become clinical psychologists, school psychologists, or family counselors. Each student collaborates with their Special Committee to design a personalized curriculum and research plan. This committee is led by a Human Development faculty member but may incorporate professors from other disciplines. Some students might need to undertake two semesters of advanced statistics coursework. All participants must build foundational knowledge in behavioral sciences and develop comprehensive expertise in human development within familial and societal contexts. Earning the M.A. degree necessitates completing a research thesis.
Most successful applicants have an undergraduate major in psychology or sociology, but students of high ability may be admitted regardless of undergraduate background.
