Ancient History explores two extraordinary Mediterranean civilizations—Greece and Rome—and their interactions, rather than focusing on a specific region or time period. This field also examines the diverse populations within the vast Roman Empire, which once stretched from Britain to Egypt, as well as the African, Asian, and European rivals of Greece and Rome, including Persians, Carthaginians, and Germans. Graduate students in this program form a dynamic, welcoming, and diverse community that fosters mutual inspiration and support. The program provides comprehensive guidance at every stage, along with valuable teaching opportunities. It actively aids students in organizing research trips across North America and internationally, submitting conference papers, applying for fellowships, and navigating job searches. Designed to be transformative and rewarding, the program offers lasting benefits. Students can easily incorporate courses from other UNC-CH History faculty and departments such as Classics, Anthropology, Art, Geography, and Religious Studies. Collaboration with NC State University and Duke University is also possible. The program enjoys strong ties with faculty across these institutions, many of whom contribute by serving on thesis or dissertation committees. Additionally, UNC-CH boasts exceptional library resources for ancient history research.
