Students majoring in American studies gain an understanding of American cultural dynamics that equips them to create meaningful, thoughtful impacts in their chosen careers. The American studies program offers five specialized tracks, each with unique curriculum requirements. The folklore concentration focuses on examining creative expression and aesthetic practices in daily life. Folklore studies highlight cultural expressions that communities imbue with significance, using them to articulate core values and concerns. While often rooted in tradition, these artistic forms adapt as communities redefine themselves amid changing social, political, and economic landscapes. Folklore extends beyond examining historical traditions to investigate emerging cultural expressions. Ethnographic fieldwork serves as the primary research method, involving immersive study of people's daily lives through dialogue and active participation. The American studies major with a folklore concentration requires completion of nine courses across specified categories.
