Founded in 1974, the department's Master's of Urban and Regional Planning (MURP) program stands as Louisiana's sole accredited professional planning program. Over the years, we've awarded degrees to more than 400 alumni now working across private firms, non-profit organizations, and government agencies at all levels throughout Louisiana and the U.S.
The MURP degree curriculum delivers professional education to prepare students for careers in urban and regional planning across public, private, and non-profit sectors. The carefully designed coursework equips students with fundamental skills to tackle complex planning challenges in real-world practice.
This 45-credit program features specialized tracks in Environmental and Hazard Mitigation Planning, Historic Preservation, Housing and Community Economic Development, Land Use and Urban Design, and Transportation Planning. These concentrations allow students to focus their training on specific professional interests. Additionally, the Department provides a Historic Preservation certificate and Hazard Planning credentials program. Students can also pursue a Graduate Certificate in Hazard Policy Studies through UNO's Political Science Department and develop GIS expertise via the Geography Department.
