The Department of Linguistics provides Master of Arts degree options in Linguistics through Plan I (24 credit hours of classes plus 6 thesis hours) or Plan II (32 course hours without a thesis), following UNM Catalog guidelines with the added stipulation that both plans require at least 12 credits of 500-level courses.
Upon acceptance into the M.A. program, you should immediately consider whether pursuing a thesis (Plan I) or taking extra coursework (Plan II) better aligns with your academic interests and professional aspirations. Each path offers distinct advantages. Thesis work provides rigorous research and writing experience beneficial for doctoral studies or specialized linguistics careers. Alternatively, the coursework track allows for comprehensive linguistic training, building a versatile foundation for advanced study or professional opportunities in the field.
