The Philosophy Department provides graduate programs culminating in either a Master of Arts or Doctor of Philosophy degree, focusing on modern Anglo-American philosophy and its intersections with other fields. While many doctoral candidates begin without an M.A., they can earn one en route to their Ph.D. The Ph.D. track mainly prepares students for academic careers in teaching and research, whereas the M.A. program serves those seeking to enhance their undergraduate knowledge or apply philosophical expertise to other professions.
Multiple faculty members specialize in philosophy of language, exploring subjects like modality, conditionals, events, tense and aspect, speech acts, implicit meaning, presuppositions, and fundamental inquiries into meaning theory and cognitive science connections.
