The Linguistics Department provides graduate programs for both M.A. and Ph.D. degrees, with a strong focus on theoretical approaches across all linguistic disciplines. Students gain comprehensive training through mandatory courses in five fundamental areas: phonetics, phonology, syntax, semantics, and field methods. The department offers advanced coursework in key specializations including phonetics and phonology, syntax and semantics, descriptive and documentary linguistics, computational linguistics, and signed language linguistics, alongside topics aligned with faculty research interests. Cross-disciplinary studies are available in departments such as Anthropology, Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, Computer Science, Philosophy, Psychology, Statistics, and various language departments.
Although the department typically does not admit students solely for an M.A., exceptions may be made under special circumstances. M.A.-only applicants generally do not qualify for funding. Ph.D. candidates should apply directly for the doctoral program, regardless of whether they hold an M.A. Both M.A. and Ph.D. students complete the same core curriculum. The M.A. program requires full-time enrollment, with classes scheduled weekdays between 8 am and 5 pm.Add body text in this space.
