The Department of Linguistics provides graduate programs for both Master's and Doctoral degrees. The curriculum focuses on theoretical foundations across linguistic disciplines, with mandatory coursework covering five key areas: phonetics, phonology, syntax, semantics, and field methodology. Specialized advanced courses are available in the department's primary focus areas including sound systems (phonetics/phonology), sentence structure and meaning (syntax/semantics), language documentation, computational linguistics, and sign language linguistics, along with topics reflecting faculty expertise. Cross-disciplinary opportunities exist through courses in Anthropology, Communication Sciences, Computer Science, Philosophy, Psychology, Statistics, and various language departments.
While the department primarily admits students into the PhD track, exceptions may be made for MA-only applicants with specific circumstances. Note that MA candidates typically aren't eligible for financial support. PhD applicants should select that option regardless of their current degree status. Both MA and PhD students complete identical foundational coursework. The MA program requires full-time enrollment, with classes scheduled weekday mornings and afternoons.Add body text in this space.
The Computational Linguistics specialization trains students in the principles, technologies, and practical applications of language processing systems, bridging linguistic theory and computer science methodologies for analyzing human language.
