The Georgetown Linguistics Department focuses on exploring various linguistic aspects through multiple research approaches. We investigate language by studying its structure, learning processes, real-world applications, and computer-based simulations. Recognizing that each analytical perspective offers valuable insights and that no single framework can answer all linguistic questions, we foster an inclusive academic environment rooted in intellectual diversity. Our Master of Science program enables students to specialize in specific linguistic fields, enhancing their abilities while discovering fresh perspectives. Graduate students pursue one of four specializations: Applied Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, or Theoretical Linguistics
Theoretical Linguistics examines fundamental language components, including speech sounds, sound systems, word formation, sentence structure, meaning, and language use. Beyond these core areas, researchers in this specialization also explore language learning and evolutionary language studies.
