The M.A. program provides students with comprehensive training in linguistics fundamentals. Candidates obtain their master's degree through a mix of academic courses and an extensive research project. Designed as a self-contained program, the M.A. curriculum serves both as preparation for doctoral studies in linguistics and as a standalone qualification. Ph.D. students also have the option to earn an M.A. degree during their studies. The program requires completing 36 to 38 course units, with a minimum of 18 units at the graduate level within the major. All students must pass a final comprehensive exam in their primary subject area, though no thesis is necessary. Typically, students finish the linguistics M.A. program within six academic quarters.
