As a cross-disciplinary academic unit, NAS is dedicated to advancing Indigenous scholarship and research at the highest level. The department provides multiple degree options including a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Master of Arts (M.A.), Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), an accelerated online B.A. program, and a minor degree at the University of New Mexico.

We strive for outstanding education about Indigenous experiences for students and the broader community, with particular focus on the rich historical and intercultural legacy of New Mexico and the U.S. Additionally, we aim to foster a collaborative environment that works closely with Native communities while preparing students for tribal nation development.

Qualification Requirements

Eligibility Requirement: have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 at the Master's degree level
Completed Bachelor's, Master's, or Juris Doctorate degree by start of Ph.D. program
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), if applicable
Submit an online graduate application and pay the fee
Upload a Personal Statement (3-5 pages) that addresses educational goals, professional plans, interest in the Ph.D. program, and background in NAS or Indigenous communities
Upload one Writing Sample (10-15 pages) of original work
Three (3) Letters of Recommendation. Academic letters are strongly encouraged
