The African American Studies program provides an interdisciplinary Ph.D. option in partnership with various departments. Current collaborative Ph.D. opportunities exist with: American Studies, Anthropology, English, Film and Media Studies, French, History, History of Art, Music, Political Science, Psychology, Religious Studies, Sociology, Spanish and Portuguese, and WGSS. Students work with graduate advisors from both African American Studies and their chosen discipline to define a specialized focus. This concentration might involve single-region examination (like Caribbean literature) or comparative analysis (such as African American literary studies within an English joint degree). Alternatively, students might explore African cultural influences in the Americas through Spanish and Portuguese studies, or pursue established disciplinary frameworks like race/ethnicity studies within Sociology.
Applicants must have completed your undergraduate degree (bachelor's or equivalent) or will have completed it prior to your intended matriculation date at Yale.
