The Spanish graduate program ranks among the nation's leading Spanish departments. Academic Analytics' annual survey currently places us first in research productivity within our discipline. Students receive thorough instruction in Iberian and Latin American literatures and cultures - including Portuguese and Brazilian studies - along with Hispanic Linguistics. Our faculty embraces innovative theoretical approaches and interdisciplinary methodologies while maintaining focus on national literary traditions. Doctoral candidates complete coursework covering Spanish language history, literary/linguistic studies, and must demonstrate proficiency in two non-Spanish foreign languages.

The African American and African Studies Designated Emphasis enhances students' knowledge of historical and contemporary research in these fields. This program creates structured opportunities for students and faculty engaged in related research to connect and collaborate across UC Davis's various academic divisions, fostering interdisciplinary exchange beyond traditional departmental boundaries.
