The Ph.D. program in Family and Child Studies builds upon an ecological and systems theory foundation to examine family relationships. This multidisciplinary approach recognizes that family interactions are most effectively analyzed within their diverse environmental contexts. Beyond a required 12-credit doctoral core, candidates collaborate with their Studies Committee to design a customized curriculum centered on Family Studies, potentially incorporating courses from both their home department and other academic units. Admission to the doctoral core seminars (covering advanced theory, research methodologies, legal/ethical considerations, policy matters in Family Studies, and practical internships) requires prior completion of graduate-level coursework equivalent to the Master's Core in Family Studies, including studies in human development, family dynamics, resource management, multicultural family challenges, basic statistics, and research methodology. Candidates must also possess 24 credits in a complementary discipline and fulfill a 15-credit inquiry skills requirement.
