Wayne State's Sociology Ph.D. program helps students deepen their understanding of human behavior and societal structures while developing expertise in data collection and analysis techniques.

Our doctoral program prepares graduates for academic positions or professional careers by offering a rigorous, well-rounded curriculum that teaches students to (1) develop theories from multiple sociological viewpoints and (2) conduct research using diverse methodologies. The program emphasizes specialized training in key areas including race/ethnicity/gender studies, health sociology, and global/comparative sociology.

The Ph.D. program's primary goal is to ready students for academic or professional careers through an intensive curriculum that develops both theoretical knowledge across sociological traditions and methodological skills. Students complete foundational coursework in sociological theory and research methods (both qualitative and quantitative), while also having opportunities to focus on specific interest areas. Available specializations include: Sociology of Health and Illness (SOHI), Race, Ethnicity, and Gender (REG), and Global, Transnational and Comparative Sociology (GTC).

G.R.E. scores will be considered, but will not be a binding criterion for admission. The Department realizes that scores on standardized tests are greatly influenced by social and cultural factors, and may not be accurate indicators of performance ability. A combined assessment of students' GPA, G.R.E. scores, transcripts, letters of recommendation, writing sample, and statements of interest will be used to make admissions decisions.
We are currently asking for paper-based TOEFL scores of 600 or above (or internet-based TOEFL scores of 100 or above) for entry into our Ph.D. program. Nonetheless, we will consider students who have a score of 550 or better on the paper version of the TOEFL (or 80 or better on the internet-based version of the TOEFL). The Department realizes that scores on standardized tests are greatly influenced by social and cultural factors, and may not be accurate indicators of performance ability.
Applicants should have a 3.5 grade point average (G.P.A.) in their master's degree work and/or previous graduate work. In particular, we will be looking at applicants' grades in any previous methods and theory courses.
