Wayne State's Sociology Ph.D. program helps students deepen their understanding of human behavior and societal structures while developing expertise in data collection and analysis techniques.
Our doctoral program prepares graduates for academic positions or professional careers by offering a rigorous, well-rounded curriculum that teaches students to (1) develop theories from multiple sociological viewpoints and (2) conduct research using diverse methodologies. The program emphasizes specialized training in key areas including race/ethnicity/gender studies, health sociology, and global/comparative sociology.
The Ph.D. program's primary goal is to ready students for academic or professional careers through an intensive curriculum that develops both theoretical knowledge across sociological traditions and methodological skills. Students complete foundational coursework in sociological theory and research methods (both qualitative and quantitative), while also having opportunities to focus on specific interest areas. Available specializations include: Sociology of Health and Illness (SOHI), Race, Ethnicity, and Gender (REG), and Global, Transnational and Comparative Sociology (GTC).
