The art history curriculum focuses on analyzing visual art to explore humanity's intellectual and cultural evolution. This program offers comprehensive training in both Western and non-Western art traditions as part of a liberal arts foundation. Undergraduate studies provide wide-ranging art historical knowledge, while graduate programs (M.A. and Ph.D.) specialize in two key areas: Arts of the Americas and Modern Age Art. Both concentrations enjoy national and international acclaim. The Arts of the Americas track examines artistic traditions from pre- and post-colonial societies across North, Central, and South America, including Mesoamerican and South American art/architecture, Indigenous arts (ancient and contemporary), Spanish Colonial works, and Latin American art from the 19th-20th centuries. This specialization investigates both the disruptions caused by European colonization and the enduring continuities in American artistic and architectural traditions.
