The marriage and family therapy specialization within human development and family studies equips you for a fulfilling career supporting individuals across various professional environments, including mental health, social services, and healthcare. You'll explore foundational therapeutic approaches while cultivating competencies to evaluate and assist diverse groups with cultural awareness and compassion. The curriculum focuses on treating individuals, partners, and family units within their broader social contexts. Practical training occurs through supervised clinical work at UNH's Marriage and Family Therapy Center, complemented by external placement opportunities. Our COAMFTE-accredited program fulfills the educational criteria for AAMFT clinical membership. At UNH, you'll join a collaborative academic community with distinguished faculty mentors. Financial support includes scholarships, stipends, and participation in our Preparing Future Faculty initiative. Students engage in scholarly activities, including research projects, publications, and conference presentations.
International applicants must hold a four-year baccalaureate degree or its equivalent as a precondition for applying to any of our graduate programs. In some cases, you may also need a master’s degree or its equivalent.

Minimum score requirements are as follows: TOEFL (Computer-based): 213; TOEFL (Internet-based): 80; IELTS (International English Language Testing System): 6.5; TOEFL ITP (Institution Administered): On case-by-case basis; TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication): On case-by-case basis; Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: 59.
