The School of Music provides talented students the chance to pursue advanced musical studies, whether for professional aspirations or personal enrichment, while also gaining a well-rounded education. Comprehensive course sequences prepare students for careers as music educators in K-12 schools, composers, professionals in music technology, private instructors, or performers, as well as offering rigorous musical training within a liberal arts framework. All campus performances, lectures, and large events are currently suspended or postponed indefinitely. This includes all academic department activities along with Montana Repertory Theatre productions and exhibitions at the Montana Museum of Art and Culture and Montana Media Lab. Events that can be adapted to virtual formats may proceed online. While we aim to reschedule where possible, the timeline for resuming in-person campus events remains uncertain.
Each year, the UM School of Music serves numerous music majors and minors, along with thousands of university students and community musicians. Recognized for excellence in music education, performance, and composition, the school boasts faculty with national and international reputations and students who consistently earn prestigious awards. With complete NASM accreditation, the School of Music offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs and hosts renowned ensembles including the All-Star Band, Choir & Orchestra, Grizzly Marching Band, along with annual events like the Buddy DeFranco Jazz Festival, Vienna Program, and UM Summer Music Camps.
