Our Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program follows the scientist-practitioner training approach, recognizing that future psychologists will likely hold multifaceted roles beyond traditional therapy practice. Prospective students should note our program may shift toward the clinical science model during their studies (details available on the Academy of Psychological Clinical Science website). Alumni data shows most graduates assume diverse professional responsibilities including supervision, teaching, research, administration, and program development alongside or instead of direct clinical work. Our curriculum equips students with robust academic training to thrive in these complex roles, requiring all candidates to cultivate both research expertise and clinical proficiency while blending scientific and practical perspectives.
Vibrant Research Culture
With its foundation in a research-intensive university, our program emphasizes scholarly inquiry. UM-St. Louis faculty maintain leading positions in their disciplines. Through close mentorship, students develop essential scientific competencies by collaborating on faculty-led research projects while gradually establishing their own scholarly identity through conference presentations, publications, and grant development.
Comprehensive Clinical Education
Beyond core training in assessment and intervention at our primary clinic, students gain specialized experience through partnerships with two additional facilities: the Center for Trauma Recovery and Children's Advocacy Center. Several faculty actively contribute to clinical research developing innovative treatments. Our campus ranks among America's top 15 for community engagement, ensuring seamless integration of research and practice in keeping with the Scientist-Practitioner ideal.
