The counseling psychology program at Tennessee State University follows a scientist-practitioner training approach. This curriculum prepares ethical, skilled professionals who can apply multicultural understanding while blending research and clinical work across diverse settings. A key focus is the continuous cycle where clinical challenges inform research questions, and findings then refine both psychological theories and therapeutic methods. Students gain comprehensive psychological knowledge, research expertise, and clinical skills for working with individuals, groups, and families. Faculty offer diverse theoretical perspectives including Psychodynamic, Cognitive-Behavioral, Systems, Interpersonal, and Integrative approaches. Alumni pursue careers in academic positions, university counseling services, community mental health facilities, VA hospitals, and private practice.

Qualification Requirements
A master's degree in, counseling, psychology, or a closely related area, such as clinical psychology or mental health counseling is required. There is a ceiling on the number of students admitted to the program in a given year. All applicants must submit a complete application in PSYCAS by December 1st for admission in the Fall
