This doctoral program offers flexible completion options, available both on-campus and fully online. The degree is offered through the School of Information Science & Learning Technologies (SISLT), where students can pursue interdisciplinary research paths. The program explores diverse investigative approaches, examining technical, cognitive, epistemological, cultural, political, and economic dimensions of information and learning. Potential research areas encompass:
Engineering education
Educational games and simulations
Information organization, retrieval, and distribution
Information behavior and usage
Interactive learning systems including VR, embodied and augmented learning
Learner-focused design, interface development, instructional systems
Cultural institutions like libraries, archives, and museums
Immersive activities including reading and gaming
User Experience (UX) and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)
Graduates will be equipped for careers in academia, policy-making, and research across multiple sectors, including interaction design, instructional design, and information science.
The program requires doctoral candidates to complete at least 9 credits of ISLT Doctoral seminars, which enhance research literacy and academic writing abilities. These 3-credit seminars are available both in-person and online. View the doctoral seminar topic rotation here.
