The University of Minnesota's art history PhD program prepares graduates for professional roles in academia, museums, and arts organizations across the globe. Our faculty's distinctive specializations enable us to provide focused training that few international institutions can rival. Current academic strengths facilitate concentrated study in these interconnected areas: ancient Persian art and archaeology (encompassing Achaemenid through Sasanian periods), Islamic art (covering medieval Persianate cultures and Ottoman/Safavid/Mughal empires), late antique art and archaeology, early modern visual cultures spanning Europe, the Atlantic world and South Asia, Renaissance and Baroque art of Northern Europe and Italy, North American visual and material culture, photographic and cinematic arts, along with contemporary art theory and practice.
Applicants with the necessary preparation holding a BA or an MA are equally encouraged to apply to the PhD program.
