The African American & African Studies (AA&AS) program serves as a hub for exploring the intricate connections between Africa, Black America, and the African diaspora. Taking an interdisciplinary approach to education, AA&AS introduces students to contemporary global challenges while exploring transformative possibilities through examining African American and African history, literature, culture, and Africa's worldwide influence. The curriculum equips learners with analytical frameworks from various liberal arts fields to uncover the rich diversity and interconnected histories within the global Black experience. AA&AS provides undergraduate instruction in two African languages - Swahili (widely spoken across Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa) and Somali. The major requires three foundational courses plus seven upper-level electives. Program alumni have successfully entered prestigious graduate and professional programs while pursuing diverse careers in fields such as education, healthcare, legal practice, creative arts, media, activism, and international relations.
