PhD candidates in Industrial and Operations Engineering receive first-year fellowships, assured financial support throughout their studies, and access to over a dozen graduate certificate programs university-wide. Our doctoral students enjoy broad interdisciplinary possibilities across campus. They can enroll in courses and collaborate with faculty from various engineering disciplines, Michigan Medicine, and other U-M schools including the Stephen M. Ross School of Business and the School of Public Health. The doctoral program typically spans 4-5 years, featuring 1-2 years of rigorous coursework followed by 2-3 years of dedicated research. This degree prepares students for conducting, overseeing, or analyzing research in academic, corporate, or governmental environments.
