This course serves as a foundational overview of core concepts and methodologies in American Studies, with a focus on cultural studies. We'll adopt a thematic framework to examine identity formation theories and their real-world expressions in American society. Conceptualizing one's identity within the imagined landscape of the United States presents both challenges and opportunities. Throughout this course, we'll investigate these complexities using diverse written and visual materials spanning the 19th to 21st centuries. By centering on identity, we'll gain insights into American culture from both domestic and international perspectives, while also exploring the academic study of American culture itself. The curriculum features assigned readings, classroom dialogues, collaborative presentations, and written assignments.
