The Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing offers specialized training in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, with flexible pathways to earn either a studio-focused degree or one that integrates coursework from the English Department or other relevant disciplines aligned with the student's creative thesis. Candidates must complete a book-length thesis of professional quality under the guidance of MFA faculty.
Established in 1989, Memphis's MFA program connects accomplished writers with a carefully selected, diverse student body in one of America's most vibrant cultural hubs. Through intimate workshops, students explore fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry under faculty mentorship, with most receiving financial support through teaching or research assistantships.
Beyond their academic pursuits, MFA candidates contribute to The Pinch, a biannual, internationally distributed literary journal recognized for excellence. The program provides teaching opportunities in local creative writing initiatives, and its graduates have achieved notable success—publishing acclaimed works, earning distinguished awards, and teaching globally. Distinguished alumni feature Darnell Arnoult, Ruth Baumann, Dolen Perkins-Valdez, Mark Yakich, Tom Graves, Heather Dobbins, K.K. Fox, Doug Haines, Marisa Manuel, Jonathan May, Tara Mae Mulroy, Kaitlyn Sage Patterson, Ashley Roach-Freiman, Randy Rudder, John Schulze, and Marisa L. Manuel.
