We appreciate your interest in Boston University's MFA Program in Creative Writing, a long-standing and highly respected program nationwide. Our poetry graduates feature notable names like Elizabeth Alexander, Erin Belieu, Rafael Campo, Melissa Green, Glyn Maxwell, Carl Phillips, and Don Share, while our fiction alumni include Peter Ho Davies, Arthur Golden, Ha Jin, Jhumpa Lahiri, Askold Melnyczuk, Melanie Rae-Thon, Weike Wang, and Lisa Taddeo. Recognized by The Atlantic as one of the top five percent of creative writing programs for faculty and alumni excellence, our program also ranks among the top ten overall.
What truly sets us apart is our ability to provide poets and fiction writers with an intensive, year-round curriculum (often including summer study) that delivers the same depth of literary exploration and craft development typically spread over two years elsewhere. Through teaching fellowships, students gain hands-on experience instructing creative writing at high school or college levels. This demanding approach succeeds thanks to the commitment and talent of our students. The fast-paced nature fosters strong connections among each year's poets and fiction writers, who also thrive in the vibrant cultural and academic environment of our university and its dynamic urban setting. Additionally, students can pursue world language studies, including BU's distinguished Translation Seminar, leading to a Global Fellowship that supports up to three months of international travel, writing, and study outside the U.S.
