The MFA Program at ODU's English Department launched in 1994 with twelve students and three creative writing professors. It has flourished over time: currently, between 25-35 students collaborate with our distinguished seven-member faculty specializing in fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. Beyond workshops and craft classes with MFA instructors, students engage with dynamic professors specializing in American, British, and global literature, along with literary theory, film studies, and rhetoric. Our 54-credit curriculum graduates students as both skilled writers and knowledgeable literary scholars. Students achieve remarkable success during their studies: publishing books with leading houses, placing work in national literary publications, contributing to major newspapers, and earning prestigious honors, awards, and funding opportunities.
