The University of Wyoming treats prose writing as a dedicated pursuit. We stand among the rare institutions offering a fully funded MFA program exclusively focused on prose. Our curriculum spans fiction, creative nonfiction, and experimental hybrid forms, taught by acclaimed faculty who publish novels, short stories, thought-provoking essays, and philosophical works. We equip graduates to publish with major houses and independent presses while applying their skills to scientific writing, radio journalism, and political communications. Understanding that writers require dedicated time to refine their voice and technique, we provide tuition waivers, meaningful (but manageable) teaching assignments, and substantial financial support. Our adaptable program structure lets students customize their studies, with many pursuing dual degrees in diverse fields including Indigenous Studies, Literary Studies, Gender Research, Environmental Science, and Earth Sciences.
Nestled near the Medicine Bow National Forest and Snowy Range, our campus offers both solitude for concentrated work and inspiration from breathtaking landscapes. Students engage with nearby writing retreats, participate in Denver's literary scene, and utilize summer grants and travel awards to conduct global research projects. Through partnerships with top literary agencies, Essay Press, and Wyoming Public Radio, we connect emerging writers with industry professionals, publication opportunities, and real-world experience in bringing literary work to audiences.
